Safe Disposal of POP Upholstered Furniture
In August 2022, the Environment Agency published guidance on the legal responsibilities for managing waste upholstered domestic seating (WUDS), due to the presence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the foam and textiles of these items.
As of 2025, any upholstered domestic seating containing POPs must be managed carefully to ensure it is:
- Not sent to landfill
- Kept separate from waste that does not contain POPs
- Not reused or recycled unless all POP-containing materials have been safely removed and destroyed in authorised facilities
