POP Guidelines for Disposal of POP-Containing Upholstered Items
In August 2022, the Environment Agency issued guidance outlining the legal responsibilities for handling waste upholstered domestic seating (WUDS), due to the presence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the foam and textiles.
As of 2025, any upholstered furniture containing POPs must be carefully managed to ensure it is:
- Not disposed of in landfill
- Kept separate from non-POP waste
- Not reused or recycled unless all POP-containing materials have been safely removed and destroyed at authorised facilities
